And I did rest. I thought I was all rested up, and I felt as if a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders; I could breathe again. I was determined about one thing: no more bedpans. Sally argued, but I won. Looking back, I think she let me win.

The skeleton looking back at me from the bathroom mirror was a stranger. I must have lost twenty pounds; my ribs were showing, my face a bearded skull, the eyes sunken wells, my hair almost down to my shoulders.

“Jesus…” I said softly.

“Don’t worry,” Sally said from the bathroom door. “After a couple of days of good food and plenty of fluids, you’ll be back to your old self.”
